This interactive mural focuses on the positive and transformative aspects of aging. Designed with butterflies, flowers, and river symbolism, the mural shares the rich experiences and words of advice gathered from over 150 older adults in the Greater Richmond Area. We invite visitors of all ages to come to our Community Paint Party and take part in making the mural and “pollinating” these positive ideas. Participants will paint on fabric squares in a “paint-by-number” style; no artistic talent is required. We hope participants will feel empowered in creating this mural with a unique and meaningful message. It will be installed on the Senior Connections building in downtown Richmond for all to see and be inspired by.

“Transforming Perspectives” is an interactive mural project for Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging, sponsored by Genworth. Artist Colleen Phelon Hall, designed the project to highlight the positive and transformative aspects of aging and create awareness for Senior Connections. Colleen gathered input from older adults in the community via surveys and interviews in order to create the design. Colorful butterflies and flowers along with quotes from interviewees reflect their hopeful words and vibrant lives. To share and “pollinate” these ideas, the mural will be painted on fabric squares, in a paint by number style. Eleven Community Paint Parties around Richmond will allow hundreds of people, of all ages, to share in the creation of the mural. This meaningful mural will then be installed on the Senior Connections building on Cary Street. Installation is scheduled for October 20-22.
