Fairy Gardens:
THE ART OF MINIATURE GARDENING

This isn’t your everyday “fairy” garden. For almost 20 years Serome has been transforming containers into miniature landscapes that he calls “Mini Worlds”. Combining dwarf trees, miniature plants and some imagination, you also can create a unique miniature landscape, perfect for a balcony or patio. Your fairy garden can even be a focal point in your full-sized garden. In this hands-on course you will learn everything you need to know on how to put together a “Mini World” of your own through a discussion of materials, plant selection, and aftercare. Serome will demonstrate on how to put together a garden, then it’s your chance to get your hands dirty and put together a garden of your very own.

About the Instructor

Serome Hamlin Fairy GardensMy name is Serome Hamlin. I have been in the “green industry” for over 25 years. Growing up in Amelia County Virginia, I have always had a passion for both plants and art. My love of plants started with annual planting with my mother every spring at the home where I grew up. After high school I got into the art program at VCU. After spending time there, I found myself working for a small landscape company and my love of gardening took over. Wanting to learn more about plants, I found myself working at Sandy’s Plants for over 12 years. There I got the chance to explore so many plants, learn their growing habits and care. This place helped to make the “plant nerd” I am today. Fast forward to now, I’m the owner of The Enchanted Garden. This is a fine gardening company that allows me to work in some beautiful gardens throughout the Richmond area. I enjoy helping to create or just cleaning up gardens and helping people to enjoy the beautiful spaces they have. I also work with the great team of Virgina Home Grown on VPM. Giving gardening tips and interviewing wonderful people on different gardening or nature subjects. About 20 years ago I started creating miniature landscapes I call “Mini Worlds”. These gardens allow me to combine both my love of gardening and art. This is a way I can make not only a landscape in miniature form, but also a moment in time that you could use your imagination to create a story. I have always felt these little gardens would be great for urban areas with limited space to have a garden. But they are also a nice focal point in a full-sized garden. Not to mention the potential for elderly members of the gardening community that aren’t able to take care of a full-sized garden anymore. These gardens allow you to experience gardening in a thumbnail space.
