KOKEDAMA

Kokedama is a type of Japanese bonsai (also known as “the poor man’s bonsai”) that involves growing plants in a ball of soil wrapped in moss. Kokedama actually translates to “moss ball” in Japanese. In this fun workshop, Conservatory Horticulturist Jayton Howard will talk about the history of this form of garden art and demonstrate how to make this fun mossy creation. You’ll have fun with moss and get your hands messy as you make our own Kokedama to take home with you. For this workshop, we’ll be using plants that flower and fun, colorful decorations and moss to make these Kokedama really stand out from the rest! Jayton will provide all the information you need to properly care for and maintain your colorful mossy creation.

Jayton Howard

If you have a size appropriate plant (6” pot size or smaller) you’ve been wanting to turn into a Kokedama, bring it along for the class, but it’s not necessary. All materials will be provided.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is happy to provide workshops that enable participants to create with live plants, but we can’t guarantee live plants will survive after they are taken home.

About the Instructor

This course is taught by Jayton Howard, one of the gardens lead horticulturist in charge of the West Section team. This team is responsible for all things growing under glass and the main central gardens. Jayton had the privilege of studying horticulture in Australia and moved to Richmond from The Big Island of Hawaii where he previously managed an agri-tourism 1000 acre farm to table Chocolate and Coffee farm. He is well equipped to teach this class and is excited to share his plant knowledge and skills.
