GARDEN SOIL

Everything starts with the soil! Find out how to build your soil for fall gardening with instructor Karin Stretchko, Agriculture Specialist at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College. We’ll learn the characteristics of basic soil types and how to analyze your own soils, including amendment techniques, drainage and more. A guided walk through the Garden will demonstrate how Lewis Ginter’s horticulturists remediate different parts of the Garden’s soil.

*This class provides 3 hours of required credit for the Garden Education Series: Gardening and Garden Design Certificate. Non-certificate students are welcome.

About the Instructor

Karin Stretchko is an Agriculture Specialist at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College where she oversees the display gardens at the Goochland campus and the plant propagation program as well as teaching in the horticulture curriculum. She has a Master of Science degree from Virginia Tech, specializing in soil science. She previously was the Conservatory Horticulturist at the Garden and instituted the Garden’s water testing program.
