Building with the Brick: Featuring LEGO® Education Products

Building with the Brick: Featuring LEGO® Education Products!

This series of trainings with LEGO® Education will provide teachers and school leaders with the opportunity to bring STEM learning alive by engaging students in relevant issues and real world problem solving while connecting to current content standards.

Dr. Shirley Disseler, a LEGO Education Trainer, professor at High Point University, and author of “The Brick Math Series”, will provide sessions developed to engage and motivate learners in math, science, language arts, and social studies.

Thursday, July 18; 9a.m. – 12p.m.
Story Telling with the Brick – Grades K-5
(Links to STEM Children’s Literature)
Story Starter empowers teachers to infuse literacy into the science curriculum and science into the language arts curriculum to create confident and engaged readers. We will look at current fiction and non-fiction children’s literature, build models to develop literacy and vocabulary skills and discuss how story starter can be utilized across curriculums in the elementary classroom.

Thursday, July 18; 1 – 4p.m.
Brick Math Introduction – Grades K-5
Brick Math is a new curriculum designed by Dr. Disseler to infuse conceptual understanding of math concepts through modeling with the brick. Topics will include addition, subtraction, place value, fractions and decimals.

Friday, July 19; 9a.m. – 12p.m.
WeDo 2.0 Early Robotics – Grades 2-5
Dive into coding as you experiment with math and science to build a robotic kicker, allowing for measurement lessons to develop. You will also develop a robotic animal and learn how to infuse this project into standards involving habitats, life cycles, and species adaptations.

Friday, July 19; 1 – 4p.m.
Simple Machines – Grades 2 – 5
Learn how students can use LEGO® bricks to explore and investigate real-world actions and reactions, build more complex mechanisms, and design their own engineering solutions to problem scenarios. The workshop will focus on the forces and motions standards within the curriculum, including builds experimenting with gears and engineering of simple machines such as the lever, screw, and pulley systems.

Saturday, July 20; 9a.m. – 12p.m.
EV3 Robotics – Grades 4-8/ FIRST® LEGO League
Ignite student engagement and energize learning through real-life problem solving. Engage your students in computer science, science, technology, engineering and math. Boost learning curves and help all your students reach their curriculum targets. With LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 hands-on, minds-on approach, the only challenge you’ll have is getting your students to leave the classroom!
