Join artist Judy Thomas as she discusses the inspiration she found in the life of John Bartram. Bartram was an 18th century Quaker botanist, plantsman and farmer who exchanged a lifetime of correspondence with leaders of European science, making many contributions about the New World.
In 2013, Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia organized a juried exhibit of botanical illustrations depicting native North American plants John Bartram and his son William collected. Judy presents a brief history of Bartram, describes how his life captured her imagination, and discusses research she conducted for the piece she successfully submitted to the exhibition, and her progress on a work of historical fiction involving Bartram’s world in colonial Philadelphia. This talk is offered in conjunction with the biennial exhibit of work by students and instructors in the Garden’s Botanical Illustration Certificate program and Art in the Garden series.
