About the Instructors
Mary Murphy and her husband of 43 years moved to Richmond 13 years ago from Connecticut to start their family farm, Wandering Cow Farm. While living in Connecticut, Mary’s family always had a small farm producing enough vegetables and eggs for the family to eat. As their 7 children grew up and became members of 4H, the family began to acquire dairy goats, sheep, and cows that liked to wander. That is how Wandering Cow Farm was born and earned its name. While her kids were occupied with 4-H, Mary was busy learning to make cheese, soap and other natural skin care products, and learning how to felt with the wool produced on the farm. This new knowledge of how to create products with herbs and other botanicals fueled a full business. Mary and her family began selling their products, which has led to a love for helping as many people as they can with not only the products but also by sharing the knowledge they’ve gained over the years. The family and farm’s motto is: “Taking the best nature has to offer and producing the best possible products for you.” Slowly, 6 of their 7 children have moved to the Richmond area and offer a helping hand on the farm. When not busy with her business, Mary is a doting grandmother to her 10 grandchildren.
Courtney Owens is the daughter of Mary Murphy and the 2nd of her 6 siblings. She grew up in Connecticut, where she went to school and graduated college. She has always had a love for all things outdoors, and has significant experience with farming, gardening, and animal care stretching back to her days of being involved in 4-H as a girl. Courtney has learned and refined many ways to make natural skincare products during her time working at her family’s farm, Wandering Cow Farm. She is in the process of starting her own farm while also balancing her family priorities as a wife and mother of a 2-year-old boy, Hunter.
