HOW TO GET THE MOST
OUT OF THE FLORA AND THE APP

Published in 2012, the Flora of Virginia is our long-overdue technical manual covering all of the native and naturalized plant species found in the Commonwealth. This three-day session covers essential aspects of the Flora that will help attendees successfully navigate dichotomous keys at all levels (family, genus, species), teach them how to get the information they need out of the species descriptions, and introduce them to some other very helpful components of the book. Included will be an explanation of how and why the book is structured the way it is, how to cross-reference different sections, and how to minimize wasted time and “dead ends” each time the Flora is used. An in-depth review of the Flora App will be provided, including how to use the general search functions, graphic and technical keys, distribution information, and other features. Course includes lecture, lab, and field practicum. Attendees are required to bring a copy of the Flora or a downloaded copy of the App with them.
