The Northside Painters
SPRING ARTSHOW

About Brenda Stankus

Nature and people fascinate me, from organic debris to flowers in bloom, to the hidden image, particularly paintings of women doing ordinary things extraordinarily. She has painted both true botanical representations and imaginary possibilities. “I love to combine surfaces with unusual painting procedures to capture what I see and present it in unusual ways.”

“Beauty can be transformative, whether in harmony or discord, and this makes working with the wonders of the organic world most exciting. There is enormous beauty not only in flower blossoms, but equally as much in the lichen on tree bark, in a garlic pod, in dried vegetables and plant debris…not to mention the unfurling of a pod as it moves from seedpod to its full form. Can we capture a new beauty often missed? The inspiration is endless!!”

Always fascinated by nature and people, Brenda started her professional career with children’s portraits in watercolor and then women in sculpture and back to painting, her first love!   She strives to communicate opportunity to her students as well as painting techniques and savvy.

Brenda’s work is in private and corporate collections throughout the nation, including several large format works in lobbies of high-rise multi-use buildings in cities like Manhattan and Washington, D.C. Solo exhibits at venues such as Union Station in D.C., the Javits Center in New York, and locally at the University of Richmond have kept the journey exciting.

Included with regular Garden admission, free for members.

We call the group showing here The Northside Painters. The Northside Painters is a group of painters and their instructor, Brenda Stankus.  Brenda has been teaching adult painting classes for 40 years. The paintings exhibited here at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens for the months of April & May 2024 are painted by current students who take weekly classes at her classroom at 1229 Bellevue Ave. We are excited to be here.

It all started when we began to hold an annual show and sale each Fall. All current students are invited to participate in all of our exhibits. This includes long-time students who enjoy the classes and have been painting together for years, as well as new students who are just starting out.

Brenda personally paints in all mediums, choosing the one she thinks best suits her subject, and she loves experimentation! She says, “My students endlessly inspire me as well, and we hope their works here inspire others.”

On display in the Kelly Education Center Community Art Gallery from March 30 – May 31, 2024.
