FOR BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION

Botanical illustrators need to be well versed in the intricacies of plant form. Morning sessions help you learn to understand the structure of flowering plants and to study and draw a diversity of plant parts under the guidance of a botanist, John Hayden. Students keep an illustrated study journal. Scientific names in botanical illustration are discussed and used. In the afternoons, students will practice close observation of the plant specimen provided and produce a different graphite drawing to be included in each students’ portfolio with Judith Towers and Sheila Hayden. Emphasis is placed on observation, accurate representation of details and labeling.

*This class provides 20 hours of required credit toward the Botanical Illustration Certificate Program. Only students who are enrolled in the certificate program may register for this course.

Supplies: A materials list can be found for this course here: bit.ly/LGBGBotanyBISupplies. Please note that the Garden is not providing any materials for this course aside from specimens. Students are responsible for supplying their own materials. The required textbook must be brought to all classes.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

John Hayden is Professor of Biology at the University of Richmond where his teaching involves diverse aspects of plant biology; he also conducts research on the anatomy, morphology and systematics of plants, curates the herbarium and manages the greenhouse. He has served as the Botany Chair for the Virginia Native Plant Society since 2004.

Sheila Hayden is a botanist and botanical illustrator. She has both a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree with a focus on Botany from the University of Richmond and an Art minor. She taught Biology at John Tyler Community College and Botany for University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Sheila has published research papers and scientific botanical illustrations.

Judith Towers is a retired art teacher from Henrico County Public Schools. She received her diploma in Art Education from James Madison College (now James Madison University). After teaching art at Tuckahoe Middle School for 32 years, she began taking botanical classes at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and studied watercolor there with Juliet Kirby for a number of years. Judith earned her Botanical Art Certificate from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and has been involved with teaching in the certificate program since 2013. Her favorite media are graphite and watercolor.
