Using the North American Pawpaw as a focus, explore the what, why and how of grafting plants and trees with Mike Ferster, founder and head orchardist of Woodside Pawpaw. Learn the history and science of grafting, followed by a demonstration of two different grafting techniques. You’ll have the opportunity to graft your own Pawpaw tree to bring home.

Mike FersterAbout the Instructor

Mike Ferster is the founder and head orchardist at Woodside Pawpaw, an orchard and plant nursery dedicated to spreading the love and knowledge of the North American Pawpaw (Asimina triloba). What started as a hobby orchard in Middleburg, Virginia, in 2017 became a lifelong passion that has followed the excitement of the “Pawpaw Renaissance,” eventually leading to the founding of a native plant nursery in Richmond, Virginia, focused entirely on pawpaw and its companion plants. Formerly trained as a teacher, Mike enjoys talking and teaching about all things pawpaw, and, of course, eating them. Mike is a member of the North American Fruit Explorers, the North American Pawpaw Growers Association, and the Piedmont and Pocahontas Chapters of the Virginia Native Plant Society.
