Garden Through the Year
with Peggy Singlemann:
BACKYARD COMPOSTING
The secret to a successful garden is the soil. Soil needs organic matter to sustain the organisms living within and the best source for the soil’s “food” is compost. Composting yard waste, vegetable food scraps and other organic materials diverts these resources from the landfill into the garden. In this class, horticulturist and Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann will provide all the information you need to manage an active compost system. We’ll discuss how to manage compostable materials in the home and the basic principles behind the science of composting. You’ll learn how those principles apply to the practice of composting, why compost benefits the soil and the different compost bins and tools used to put the practice into action. Class will begin indoors before moving out into the Garden to illustrate examples of composting practices.
