BASIC RESIDENTIAL
LANDSCAPE DESIGN

This comprehensive course enables you to thoughtfully and responsibly plan a landscape enhancing the architecture of your home and reflecting your personality. Learn the basics of site and structure then proceed with analyzing climate and setting. An emphasis on design theory includes color, texture, line, form and function. Plant selection, soil analysis, material selection and ecological responsiveness (resiliency) are also discussed and incorporated into your landscape design. This course includes four Saturday sessions and two Sunday afternoon studios sessions bring concepts to paper as you apply the processes discussed. You will need photographs of your planned garden area and a plat of your property.

Site AssessmentThis course takes place over 4 Saturdays and 2 Sundays:
  • 4 Saturdays: September 9, 16, 23, 30 from 9-11:30 am
  • 2 Sundays: September 24, October 1 from 1-4 pm

Students are required to supply the required textbook (either as a rental or purchase) for this course: Residential Landscape Architecture: Design Process for the Private Residence, 7th Edition

All other materials required for this course (except the textbook) will be provided for students as a rental kit (included with the fee for the course). Students will receive the kit of supplies on the first day of class and will return the kit on the last day of class. *This class provides 16 hours of required credit for the Garden Education Series: Gardening and Garden Design Certificate. Non-certificate students are welcome.

Janine LesterAbout the Instructor

Janine Lester is a landscape designer and consulting arborist in Richmond, Virginia. She is a Board-Certified Master Arborist, Municipal Specialist, and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor. She holds a degree in Horticulture and is the only female Board-Certified Master Arborist in Virginia. Janine recently retired from the Urban Forestry Division in the City of Richmond, where she reviewed land development plans, and permits for the planting, pruning, and removal of Richmond’s public tree assets. She served on the Board of Directors of the ISA, the Urban Forestry Commission in the City of Richmond, and as education chair of the Richmond Tree Stewards from 2012 – 2021. She holds memberships in many professional organizations, including the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA), Society of Commercial Arborists (SCA), the Arboricultural Research and Education Academy (AREA), and the Arbor Day Foundation, among others. Janine enjoys talking to groups about landscape issues, conducting training workshops, and offers landscape consulting services throughout Virginia.
