BEYOND THE BASICS

Learn everything you need to know about Philodendron care from the expert team at RVA Tropical & Exotic Plants. This interactive roundtable event is for beginners and experienced plant parents alike. You’ll also have the opportunity to network with other plant lovers and see rare and unusual Philodendrons up close. What you’ll learn:

–How to choose the right Philodendron for your space

–The basics of Philodendron care including watering, fertilizing and light requirements

–How to propagate Philodendrons

–How to identify and treat common Philodendron pests and diseases

–How to create a beautiful and thriving Philodendron collection

After this event, you’ll be able to confidently care for your Philodendrons and create a thriving collection. As part of this class, we’ll also take a self-guided tour of the tropical plants in the Conservatory.

*This class provides 2 hours of elective credit for the Garden Education Series: Gardening and Garden Design Certificate. Non-certificate students are welcome.

About the Instructors

John Jefferson is the owner of Chimera Tropicals, a rare and exotic plant nursery in Richmond, Virginia. He is passionate about aroids and is dedicated to growing the hobby and introducing young people to horticulture. He is a skilled grower and hybridizer with a deep understanding of aroid taxonomy and cultivation. John is excited to be an instructor for the upcoming philodendron roundtable. He is also a board member of the International Aroid Society.

Susannah Phillips has been growing plants since she was a kid, starting with cosmos and zinnias from seed. She’s worked in a greenhouse, in interior landscaping and as a houseplant department supervisor. She’s a member of several plant societies and is always learning new things about plant care. She’s passionate about providing advice about the best possible plant care for success.

Miranda Springston is a plant enthusiast with a passion for growing and caring for plants. She has worked as a greenhouse grower and interned at Norfolk Botanical Garden, where she gained experience in propagating, maintaining and treating plants for pests and diseases. Miranda is knowledgeable about a variety of plants including houseplants, annuals and tropical plants. She is also an avid home gardener; her own collection of plants includes Haworthia, Philodendron and Begonia.

Maks Zagorodniy is a plant instructor with over 25 years of experience growing and propagating tropical plants. He is passionate about helping people learn about philodendrons and has been specializing in them for the past 5 years. Maks is a moderator for the RVA Tropical and Exotic Plants group on Facebook and is excited to be an instructor for the upcoming roundtable on philodendron care.
