MAKING MAGICAL
Terrariums & Micro-Gardens

Registration is closed for this program.

A terrarium is a simple but magical creation: it refers to any container—sealable or open-air—that contains soil and plants that can be maintenanced over time to help the plants flourish. In this workshop, instructors Jayton Howard (Conservatory Horticulturist) and T.J. Oliver (Kroger Community Kitchen Garden Horticulturist) will unearth the history of terrariums, including the story behind the first credited terrarium, which started as an accidental experiment in the 1800s. You’ll have the opportunity to get your hands dirty as you make your own magical mini-garden in a small jar. You’ll learn everything you need to know about how to care for your terrarium at home.

Fees: Member $42, Non-Member $50

All programs are subject to change. Pre-registration through our website is required.

About the Instructors

Jayton Howard grew up in Oregon working at his mother’s flower shop, had the privilege of studying horticulture in Australia where he also managed a garden shop for 5 years, then moved to Hawaii to specialize in tropical growing where he managed wholesale nursery operations as well as a cacao and coffee farm. Now he is here in Richmond at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden as the Conservatory Horticulturist where he gets to keep the tropical lifestyle alive.

T.J. OliverT.J. Oliver is a Horticulturist in charge of the Kroger Community Kitchen Garden here at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Since 2010, he has traveled all over the United States learning and working in Agriculture and in the Apiary business, including in Hawaii, California, New York, Vermont, and now here in Virginia. T.J. utilizes a no-dig gardening method, recognizing that macro and micro biotic organisms in the soil constitute a food-web community which convert available nutrients in the soil to the mineral components plants need to thrive, simulating the natural processes which the natural world uses to maintain fertility in its soil. T.J. cares deeply about organization, cleanliness, and views gardening as a visual art form, incorporating beauty, varieties of beneficial and ornamental flowers, and native plant species into his agricultural gardens. He also prioritizes compost, soil building, and ensuring a thriving mycorrhiza symbiosis between plants and fungi within the soil. In his spare time T.J. likes to fish, hike, camp, and canoe with his wife and also creates aquariums, vivariums, and paludariums which simulate the natural biomes for the many creatures he takes care of, all while progressing his knowledge of the natural world.
