Mitzi Shifflett
Vice President, Accounting and Administration
Mitzi is a dedicated and detail-oriented accounting professional and has worked at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden since 1999. During that time, the department has grown from a small operation to a robust department including the divisions of Accounting, Human Resources and Project Management, which she oversees. After a career in the corporate and government sector for 14 years – including working for the IRS, Federal Reserve Bank and Commonwealth’s Attorney offices, Mitzi transitioned her professional focus to non-profits.
Mitzi is known for her diligence, expertise and sterling ethics. She is focused and highly organized, managing the backbone of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s business. She is a positive, energetic leader who works tirelessly to build up her team. As the previous comptroller for the Garden, she oversaw the audit, capital assets, and financial reporting before being promoted to Vice President of Accounting and Administration.
Mitzi attended Virginia Commonwealth University with specific studies in Accounting and Psychology. She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has received five consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator. Only 17% of charities evaluated by Charity Navigator have received at least five consecutive, 4-star ratings, which means that Lewis Ginter outperforms most other charities in the United States. Certainly, Mitzi’s dedication to transparency and her commitment to detailed financial reporting helped the Garden earn this significant award.
Mitzi lives in Goochland County, VA with her husband, where she raised her two boys. In her free time she enjoys, gardening, traveling, camping, and spending time outdoors. Mitzi has a deep commitment to and is a long-time advocate for, children with special needs. She is certified by the Federation for Children with Special Needs (FCSN) and is also a supporter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
